EUGENE MIRMAN, Grist’s special correspondent in Copenhagen, is back with a new report from COP15. Eugene joined tens of thousands of protesters for the rally and march during the UN Climate Change Conference. Amidst a colorful display of activism at Parliament Square, Eugene talks with those in attendance including some protesting the protest, a "Wild Thing", and a very cute dog.

Major big ups to MATT & KIM on winning the VIDEO OF THE YEAR at last night's WOODIE AWARDS!! According to MTV, not only did the duo take the trophy for the Best Video for "Lessons Learned", but Matt and Kim's energy-filled opening performance of the song complete with stripping background dancers and crowd surfing set the tone for the entire show! Riding their bikes thru the city and onto the red carpet, Matt & Kim owned the show beginning to end. Congratulations on a huge night, Matt & Kim! You guys have earned every bit of it!!!!!!!

Kumail Nanjiani to Host the 19th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards™ Show

The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP), the nation’s oldest and largest organization of independent filmmakers, announced Kumail Nanjiani will host the 19th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards™ Show on November 30th in New York City. Kumail will be in some pretty good company as confirmed presenters include Meryl Streep, Ellen Burstyn, Brooke Shields, and Willem Dafoe, among others. Kumail performed on The Late Show with David Letterman last week -great stuff- check it out here!

What was Eric Frederic thinking?
"When I first heard "Surprise Hotel," I felt all these little thought bubbles effervescing in my brain. There is a lot to take in, on a musical level. The original vocal coats this exuberant track with a calm, peaceful beauty. So I started combing the universe for a vocal that seemed as wilin' out as those guitar parts and roughly the same tempo and / or key. Turns out Mariah Carey's "Emotions" is already in the exact same key (the relative minor) and dances atop the rhythm section like it was born to. This is the first segment of SiSTRS from different MiSTRS."

OLA PODRIDA TO RELEASE NEW LP 'BELLY OF THE LION'

'Belly of the Lion' is David Wingo's highly anticipated second full length release under the name Ola Podrida. Written and recorded by Wingo, 'Belly of the Lion' is a fitting follow up to Ola Podrida's hugely praised self-titled debut lp which received high marks from the likes of Pitchfork, NPR, SPIN, BrooklynVegan and Gorilla Vs Bear, landed on Best of 2007 lists for My Old Kentucky Blog and V Magazine and found Ola Podrida sharing stages with the equally talented Fleet Foxes, She and Him, and Beach House, among others.

A Texas native who has lived between Austin and Brooklyn the past few years, David Wingo has made quite a name for himself as a sought-after soundtrack composer, notably for films by David Gordon Green, Todd Rohal, Craig Zobel, and Jared Hess. It was while living in Brooklyn last year that Wingo set to work on his tremendous new lp, 'Belly Of The Lion'. Writing, recording and playing nearly everything on the album, Wingo created a shoegazey folk rock record so organic, so unique and well-balanced, it's hard to believe he was alone in his apartment during most of the process. Chock full of unsentimental love songs and cinematic songscapes built with layers of guitar and vocal melodies, the album tracks swell to the point of nearly bursting, shimmer like gems, and are gently driven by rhythms and fragile vocals.

'Belly Of The Lion' will be available November 10 2009 via Western Vinyl (Here We Go Magic, Balmorhea). A US tour tba.

DIGNAN ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF DEBUT LP ‘CHEATERS & THIEVES’

Dignan announce the release of their highly anticipated debut LP ‘Cheaters & Thieves’ and a massive US tour in support. The McAllen, TX group set out on a vast six month tour in late 2007/08 with their impressive self-released EP “The Guest’ in hand and went from virutal unknowns, who early on sat with their guitars in empty church vestibules writing their songs, to a mega touring band selling out the initial pressing of the EP and gaining a huge following along the way. While taking their Cursive-meets-Arcade Fire sound across the US, Dignan shared the stage with the likes of Plain White T's, Ra Ra Riot and Color Revolt as well as hitting festivals like South by Southwest and Cornerstone where they played to thousands, furthering building their fanbase and proving their are a band to watch.

Earlier this year, Dignan took some time off from touring and poured their hearts into a DIY effort of great proportion in creating ‘Cheaters & Thieves’. Lead singer/guitarist Andy notes that in the process, “Each song just sort of came together on their own. All of the themes in each of these songs are things that really tug at my heart; infidelity, the search for life’s answers, the struggle between right and wrong. We added a lot of group vocals, and a lot of layering of different vocals. I recorded guitars with multi mic setups which I'd never done." The record was mixed at Premium Recordings in Austin where they also recently returned to play the Pachanga Festival with a memorable performance which left one reviewer heralding Dignan saying, “Mark our words, these youngsters are going places”. And the result has already gained the attention of Paste Magazine where the album’s first single “Two Steps”, through popular vote, earned a place on the Paste/Heineken CD Sampler.

WALLPAPER. ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF 'DOODOO FACE' ON EENIE MEENIE RECORDS!

After turning out three outstanding EPs of diced, digital beats and lyrics caricaturing the pop vernacular and hugely popular live shows, the "glitz n grit" champs of the dancefloor WALLPAPER. announce the release of their highly anticipated debut lp 'Doodoo Face'. Written, produced and recorded by the genius and sometime schizo talents of Eric Frederic and beatkeeper Arjun Singh, Wallpaper. present 11 supreme tracks built with percussive funk blurred with huge beats, dark synthesizer blurt and crushing bass topped by the vocals of egomaniac Ricky Reed, all steeped in Eric's oldest influences: P-Funk, Afrobeat, and the panoply of Bay Area rap.

Under the very able hand of Eric, who is entirely ace at merging the organic into the electronic as evidenced by his hot remixes for Passion Pit and Das Racist, 'Doodoo Face' also shows a great move forward in production for Wallpaper. The drums were recorded live with Arjun behind the kit, Eric's on guitar on many of the tracks while the trumpet comes courtesy of Darondo sideman Brian Switzer. 'Doodoo Face' has strains of Justice too, in the seething bass of “Celebrity,” and even Eno in the minimalist pop of “Fine GF.” “Frk Scn” features female vocals and a distinct live Ghanaian rhythm known as “Ewe,” while on “Gettin' Drip” Eric handcrafts his own “chipmunk soul” sample to accompany the chorus. From the cavernous thump and honking sax of opener “Indecent” to the warped hyphy of “ddd” to “Doodoo Face” itself, Wallpaper.s debut full length is dark, nasty, load-bearing booty funk of the Oakland house party variety.

The brilliant TOM SHILLUE will be part of the 826NYC Benefit happening June 19 @ Bar Matchless in Brooklyn. The theme for the night is "vacation" so you can look forward to one of the city's finest and funniest storytellers presenting an original piece alongside a talented line up.

Available early this August on BADMAN RECORDING CO (My Morning Jacket, Starf*cker), it will feature longtime friend and HOLD STEADY singer CRAIG FINN contributing vocals on "You're Never Alone in New York”, and CLOUD CULT violinist SHANNON FRID duets on "In These Times of Harsh Economy", a chilling ballad about John Dillenger's Lady in Red, Anna Sage.
