The Eastern Sea just dropped the new indie anthem. |
Attention, cardigan owners: we've got your new indie crush right here. Austin, Texas' The Eastern Sea
makes urgent, tuneful music you can dive right into, especially if
autumnal chilliness and serious feelings are your jam. The group's new
single, "Wasn't For Love," opens with a burly bass line and twinkling
mallet percussion before stomping into a head-turning indie-rock plea.
Frontman Matthew Hines' quivering voice lands somewhere between Ben Gibbard and Conor Oberst
-- like those gentleman, he's a sensitive lyricist, singed with
palpable anxiety of trains leaving the station and "the thought that
someday soon / maybe you'd fear me, too." The darker vibes are balanced
by The Eastern Sea's bright musicianship: the song turns to Sufjan Stevens-esque
horn orchestration and glimmers with a breathy, group-vocal chorus.
Pretty as it gets, the rhythm section keeps the song thumping and
insistent -- expect a well-deserved "Gossip Girl" closing montage in
Eastern Sea's future.
The track's the first look at the band's official debut, Plague, which they tracked live to tape (chops!) in Austin's HOTTRACKS!!! studio with producer Matt Smith (Ola Podrida,
Golden Bear). The album drops June 26 on WhiteLabBlackLab -- we'll just
be hanging out under our air conditioning and planning our fall/winter
2012 wardrobes all summer anyway, so no rush.
+ Listen to The Eastern Sea's "Wasn't For Love."
NEW BEARD ANNOUNCE NY SHOWS
PREMIERE "I WALK THE STREETS" VIDEO
PREMIERE "I WALK THE STREETS" VIDEO
NYC's most exciting and strange new group NEW BEARD announce summer shows in support of their upcoming 'NEW BEARD CITY' LP co-produced by frontman Ben Wigler (Arizona) and Dungen's Gustav Ejstes. You've never seen a band like New Beard. With influences from Elliot Smith to Megadeth and Japanese folk, these bearded weirdos are: a hobbit with the voice of an angel (Ben Wigler), a virtuousic electric tuba player (Tuba Joe Exley), a singly named lefty guitar wizard (Yazan), a sax blasting girl (Maria Christina Eisen), and a Japanese-singing, uber-hyper drummer (Tony Waldman) whose percussive performances on a custom-made glow in the dark drumkit are genuine religious experiences.
New Beard play June 4 at Mercury Lounge at 6:30 giving you the chance to hear brand new album tracks and have the rest of the night to figure out just what hit you! A June 22 show in Brooklyn offers the first opportunity to buy 'New Beard City' before its June 26 release on SHOULDER TAP RECORDS, and July 3 is the Record Release Party at Mercury where they will perform 'New Beard City' in full and early ticketholders can get free merch! All info below. Press tix available.
Catch the video premiere of 'New Beard City' unreleased track "I Walk The Streets" via Magnet Magazine who say "Beautiful women, fake beards and regurgitation! New Beard’s video for “I Walk the Streets” has it all. It’s wonderfully weird." Watch it here: http://bit.ly/LKT7bi

Kurt Braunohler sits down with Bullseye's Jesse Thorn to discuss the myriad ways in which the conventions of the game show format are begging to be satirized, the serendipitous origin of Kurt & Kristen, and how they took one of our all-time favorite sketches, "Kristen Schaal is a Horse", to Australia's biggest stage.

REGGIE WATTS brings his
unique style of improvised musical comedy back to COMEDY CENTRAL with the world premiere of “REGGIE WATTS: A LIVE AT
CENTRAL PARK,” airing Friday, May 11 at
1am ET. In this all new special, the internationally renowned
vocalist/beatboxer/musician/comedian performs live in Central Park using
nothing more than his formidable voice, keyboard and a looping machine to
create completely impromptu musical sets. Whether he's explaining why Cingular

is, or why guns will always be louder than knives, Watts continues to prove
why he is a master of blending and
blurring the lines between comedy and music. As a fun bonus to the special, a
reoccurring sketch is woven throughout the stage sets where the adventurous Watts tries to determine whether his
performance in the Park was real or just a dream.

HI AMERICA, it's me again, Jon Benjamin. I know we haven't spoken since my bar mitvah speech (sorry about my controversial opposition to the IDF's 1978 attack on Lebanon) Anyway, I made a show in 2010 called Jon Benjamin Has a Van and after a full season, myself, Leo Allen and Nathan Fielder decided to celebrate our middling ratings by launching a tour. Soon thereafter, Comedy Central cancelled our show, but the tour will still go on. So, without further adieu, I formally announce our Cancellation Tour. We will be in 7 cities over the course of ten days (a national record) and we'll perform comedy, magic and show uncensored footage and deleted scenes from American Reunion. It will be cheap, fast and easy. Thanks and hope to see you there. Love, Jon.

THE EASTERN SEA ANNOUNCE NEW LP PLAGUE
ALBUM TRACK "A LIE" FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD
ALBUM TRACK "A LIE" FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD
Austin band THE EASTERN SEA announce the release of their remarkable new album PLAGUE due out June 26 on the WhiteLabBlackLab label. Created in 2005 as the bedroom project of songwriter/vocalist Matthew Hines, The Eastern Sea quickly emerged as one of the Lone Star State's most talked about bands after the release of The Eastern Sea, a collection of two eponymous EPs in '08 and '09. The band earned the attention of the national press, made several festival appearances including SXSW, CMJ, FPH Summerfest, set out on a pair of national tours and firmly established themselves beyond their local loyal fanbase as a One To Watch.
The Eastern Sea began work on Plague, their first official full length, in 2010. The album was recorded to tape by Matt Smith (Ola Podrida, Golden Bear) at HOTTRACKS!!! in Austin and mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering (Bon Iver, Andrew Bird). Their most cohesive collection of songs to date, Plague combines the hypnotic rhythm of post-rock, the playful melodies of traditional American folk, and the dynamics of contemporary progressive indie-rock. Lyrically, frontman/multi-instruentalist Hines' boldly present vocals weave a revealing autobiographical narrative, developing themes of change, transition, and powerlessness over the course of Plague's twelve cohesive and compelling songs.
The Eastern Sea will be showcasing new songs at Stubbs on Friday, April 13. More touring tba.

Los Angeles duo Soft Swells was formed in 2009 of former solo artist Tim Williams and former Phonograph member Matt Welsh. The duo's self-titled debut, recorded with producer Dave Lynch, will be out on February 28 via Modern Outsider Records. “Put It On The Line” is a glimpse of the album – a layered, propulsive indie-pop number that grapples with revealing one’s true feelings for another.

Soft Swells announce the release of their outstanding self-titled debut LP, out Feb 28 on Modern Outsider (Ume). Soft Swells follows up the group's hot 7" featuring tracks "Every Little Thing" and “Lifeboats” which grabbed airplay at KCRW and KROQ and started a Soft Swells buzz on the West Coast last summer leaving fans anxiously awaiting the release of an LP. The band also announces upcoming West Coast shows including NoisePop and a showcase at SXSW.
Soft Swells was recorded in the UK by Dave Lynch (Clearlake, Liam Finn, Ed Harcourt), and is the first full length from the new band fronted by Tim Williams (Dovecote Records) and collaborator Matt Welsh (Phonograph) and they are heading into its release with great momentum. Soft Swells were named BuzzbandsLA's Band To Watch in 2012, earmarked as "Potential breakout at this year's SXSW" by OperationEvery Band and recently featured band on MTV Buzzworthy. Their new album single "Put It On The Line" was featured track on MTVHive and also debuted in the Top 10 at specialty radio, all while glowing album reviews have been hitting online well in advance of the release, too.

MTVHive Premieres Soft Swells album single "Put It On The Line" from upcoming Soft Swells lp out Feb 28! http://read.mtvhive.com/2012/01/20/soft-swells-put-it-on-the-line-song-premiere/
This year's SF Sketchfest brings the best comedians to town as well as some awesome musical guests! The fest, which kicks off this Thursday, features musical appearances by Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie, Ted Leo, Zach Rogue from Rogue Wave, Reggie Watts, Robert Glasper, Garfunkel & Oates, Ann Magnuson, w00tstock, the Reigning Monarchs and more! The seventeen-day comedy festival runs January 19 through February 4, 2012.
Just added to SF Sketchfest 2012 is the Closing Night finale, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: The Peaches Christ Experience with very special guest Barry Bostwick (Cougar Town) and live preshow musical numbers by Peaches Christ and Friends. At the Castro Theatre on Saturday, February 4 at 9:30pm
Also with a musical flair are:
Bruce McCulloch: The Pink Dot Stories will include songs and musical accompaniment by Marc Capelle. A member of one of the most lauded sketch groups of all time, the Kids in the Hall’s Bruce McCulloch, whose other recent work includes the ABC comedy series Carpoolers and the critically-acclaimed Kids in the Hall miniseries Death Comes to Town, returns to SF Sketchfest with a very special night of brand new material in his one-person show The Pink Dot Stories, coming to the Eureka Theatre on Friday, January 20th at 8pm.
MAME THAT CHUNE with Brent Weinbach and Rob F. Martinez a video-game music game show and dance party, at Hemlock Tavern on Saturday, January 21 at 5:30pm.
Pretty Good Friends with Eugene Mirman, Matt Besser, Michael Ian Black, Ron Funches, Jon Glaser, Bobcat Goldthwait and musical guest Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie. Eugene Mirman, named Best New York City Comedian by the Village Voice and one of the ten best comedians of the last decade by Paste magazine, comes to Cobb’s with his Pretty Good Friends on Saturday, January 21 at 8pm.
Thrilling Adventure Hour will feature live music with the Andy Paley Orchestra. Acker & Blacker’s The Thrilling Adventure Hour is an irreverent old-time radio-style production with Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds), John DiMaggio (Futurama), Colin Hanks (Dexter), John Hodgman (Arthur), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Samm Levine (Inglourious Basterds), Joshua Malina (The West Wing), Bruce McCulloch (The Kids in the Hall), Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU), Busy Philipps (Cougar Town), Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects), Andy Richter (Conan), Paul F. Tompkins (Community), James Urbaniak (The Venture Brothers) and more at Marines' Memorial Theatre on Saturday, January 21 at 9pm and Sunday, January 22 at 2pm.
The Paul F. Tompkins Show is the hilarious host’s popular variety show for the 21st Century. Neither a parody of, nor a slavish re-creation of, "olde-tyme sho-biz," the show combines comedy and music in a contemporary fashion. Paul welcomes friends Judy Greer (Arrested Development), John Hodgman and musical guest Ted Leo (of the indie rock outfit Ted Leo & The Pharmacists) to Yoshi’s San Francisco on Sunday, January 22 at 7pm and 9pm.
Stella: The Classic Nightclub Show, features Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain, well known for their Comedy Central series Stella and groundbreaking MTV sketch show The State. They will be joined by surprise guest comedians and house band Release the Sunbird, featuring Zach Rogue from Rogue Wave at Mezzanine on Sunday, January 22 at 8pm.
An Evening with Ann Magnuson: The Drawing Room Apocalypse, A Salon des Beaux Arts for the Fin du Monde 2012. Because the Mayan calendar promises that the world shall end in late 2012, Ann Magnuson has decided to celebrate early. A mashing up of 'end of the world' songs, appropriately themed spoken word stories and bona-fide poetry will be presented as a contemporary twist on the "Victorian Drawing Room Entertainment" at Yoshi’s Oakland on Tuesday, January 24 and Wednesday 25 at 8pm.
RISK! Storytelling True Tales, Boldy Told with Kevin Allison, live music by the Ramshackle Romeos on both nights and guests Robert Ben Garant, Nikki Glaser, Joshua Grannell, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Natasha Leggero on Friday, January 27 at 10:30pm. Guests Steve Agee, Myq Kaplan, Rick Overton, Vanessa Ragland and Sheng Wang appear on Saturday, January 28 at 10:30pm. Both shows are at The Eureka Theatre.
w00tstock Founders’ Night featuring co-creators Adam Savage (Mythbusters), musical comedy duo Paul and Storm (Da Vinci’s Notebook) and actor/ author/blogger Wil Wheaton (Stand by Me) is an epic salute to nerdery. It’s an evening of songs, readings, comedy, demonstrations, short films, and other clever widgets born from and dedicated to the enthusiasms, obsessions, trials and joys of geek pride. At Marines’ Memorial Theatre on Sunday, January 29 at 7:30pm.
Reggidency: a Reggie Watts Series will feature the brilliant comic and musical improviser in four dates at four separate venues, each one unpredictable, original and wildly different. Part 1: “Reggie Watts solo: just the music” happens at Yoshi’s San Francisco on Tuesday, January 31 at 8pm. Part 2: “Reggie Watts + Garfunkel & Oates: the comedy” takes place at Mezzanine on Wednesday, February 1 at 8pm. Part 3: “Reggie Watts + Robert Glasper: the jazz collaboration” hits Yoshi’s Oakland on Thursday, February 2 at 8pm. Then Part 4: “Reggie Watts + Silent Film: an improvised scoring” will round out the series at the Roxie Theater on Friday, February 3 at the stroke of midnight.
Rounding out the variety on Closing Night will be bestselling author and festival favorite Greg Behrendt and his music-meets-comedy gem Bring The Rock, with the Reigning Monarchs and guest storyteller/singers Dave Anthony, Todd Barry, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Will Forte, Mary Lynn Rajskub and surprise guests in a half-storytelling/half-karaoke rock show. At Cobb’s on Saturday, February 4 at 10:30pm.
